PSYCHOLOGIST & FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS EXPERT

I’m Toekie. For almost twenty years, I've been the psychologist and trusted confidante high achievers and leaders turn to when they're ready to stop paying for their success with their peace of mind, joy & presence at home.

Toekie van Apeldoorn is wearing red earrings, a black top with ruffle details on the shoulders, and is seated inside near a window.

Finding my feet when life knocked me sideways

I grew up as the youngest of three children, with two older brothers, in a village in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands. With a creative mother and a hardworking father, I had everything I needed.

Until my eldest brother passed away.

More losses followed, and for years I wrestled with the grief, anger, longing, love, loyalty and guilt that came with them. Feelings no one ever gives you a manual for.

I had to learn how to live with difficult emotions without letting them decide how I lived my life. How to find my footing and build something steady within myself when life around me was anything but.

Those years shaped the woman I became. And, in many ways, the psychologist I wish I'd had back then. Someone who stands firmly beside you, who's steady enough to lean on, honest enough to tell you the truth and stays with you through the uncomfortable parts.

These days, I work with people who've done exceptionally well for themselves, yet find themselves thinking: I can't keep doing things this way.

I've met enough successful, intelligent people to know that understanding a problem and changing it are two very different things.

I've seen enough of life, and enough of what goes on behind even the most successful lives, to know that positive thinking won't magically sort everything out.

For me, real change starts when we stop circling around what's really going on and look at what's underneath, with the honesty to face it and the steadiness to stay with it.

Sometimes life is simply rubbish.

And when it is, you still get to decide how you live it.

I know how to look beneath the surface and get to the root of what's really driving it all.

Almost twenty years of working with people at the highest levels have given me a deep understanding of the pressures and complicated dynamics that come with success, your career, your position or your family name, and how easily they follow you home.

I've seen how a successful life can start taking more than it gives back.

And I recognise the old patterns behind the responsibilities you automatically take on, the things you keep fixing and the way you push through even when you've had enough.

Often long before you've even found the words for what's going on yourself.

Clients tell me that within minutes, I've put my finger on something they've spent years trying to understand.

And I'll tell you what I see.

Sharp and direct when needed. Gentle when there's room for softness. Always discreet, honest and without judgement.

Beyond my work as a psychologist, family constellations expert and business owner, I’m also just Toekie.

✓ Married to Michiel, a stepmother, godmother and foster mother, and proud dog mum to Scooby.

✓ I love running, getting lost in a good book, long walks on the beach and ice cream with peanut butter.

✓ I studied law and psychology, travelled the world as a KLM purser and have lived enough life myself to know that things rarely go to plan.

✓ I'm just as happy enjoying good food and wine on a beautiful terrace as I am having tea and cake sitting in the grass.

✓ What drives me? Helping people find their way back to themselves and each other, with enough love and connection to experience happiness even when life gets messy.

WHAT WORKING WITH ME LOOKS LIKE

My 360° approach

You can understand yourself incredibly well and still find yourself repeating the same patterns. Know you're taking on too much responsibility and find yourself doing it all over again tomorrow. Know you need a break, yet somehow wait until everything's done before allowing yourself to take one.

That short fuse at home is rarely just about the question someone asked at the dinner table. The noise in your head is rarely just about your calendar. And the responsibility that keeps landing on your shoulders usually has deeper roots.

That's why I work on three levels at once.

Cognitive — I help you understand yourself, what drives your behaviour and why certain patterns keep repeating.
Emotional — We reconnect with your emotions and how to respond to them.
Systemic — Through family constellations, we explore the family dynamics, loyalties and entanglements that shape the roles you take on. So you can feel free to take your own place in life.

Wat mijn klanten zeggen over mij

  • From the very first meeting, I felt that Toekie understood me and somehow knew what I was looking for before I even knew it myself.

“I look back on my time with Toekie with a little sadness, or perhaps it's more like homesickness. Wow, what a journey.

‘It’ works. Toekie has a way of reaching your subconscious, on a subconscious level and often in ways I can't quite explain, but oh, how much it has given me.

I found the energy and confidence to start a new job, one that fits my needs and what I want from life. A place where I can thrive, make mistakes and know that either way, I'll be okay.

I'm so grateful our paths crossed. I'll always cherish the time we spent working together. It gave me the fresh start I needed.” — Yuki

  • Working with Toekie has had a greater impact on my personal life and career than any course or professional training I've ever taken.

“Before I came to Toekie, I was literally stuck. I wasn't particularly unhappy, but I was struggling more and more to get things done. I was more emotional than usual and had so much less energy. It almost felt like apathy. I couldn't pinpoint what was causing it. Was it serious enough to see a therapist?

After just one session with Toekie, I never doubted that decision again. Toekie has helped me enormously in finding my way forward. I was always the one deciding what we worked on and where our sessions would go, but Toekie brought so much more than a listening ear and understanding. She knew which questions to ask and gave me valuable insights, exercises and practical tools that gradually helped me work through these issues.

It takes energy to do this kind of work, but with Toekie, I felt calm and confident throughout the process.

This experience has made my life so much easier.”

    — Juliette

  • From our very first conversation, Toekie made me feel heard.

“Before coming to Toekie, I often felt so alone. Always putting on a brave face. Physically, but especially emotionally. Being strong. But I felt vulnerable and unseen. While other people saw me as strong, powerful and positive.

Toekie immediately asked the right questions, which made me feel that she would understand me. And throughout our time working together, she proved me right.

She gently took me by the hand and created a safe space where I could reconnect with the little girl I once was. Family constellations helped me understand why I feel the things I feel.

Little by little, I started to see how I could move forward, always at my own pace. And above all, I always felt heard. Her honest, direct approach was exactly what I needed, because I'm someone who prefers people to be straightforward with me.

Now I feel so much more balanced. Life still throws challenges my way, and I've never been someone who's had an easy road. But I feel better equipped to deal with whatever comes.

Toekie's beautiful metaphors still help me regularly. And if I had to name the most important thing I've learned from her, it would be how to listen to myself and truly reconnect with who I am, from the little girl I used to be to the woman I've become.

Working with Toekie has been such a beautiful gift to myself.”

    — Astrid

  • I really felt that you were standing right beside me throughout this process, and that meant so much. Step by step, at my own pace.

“I thought I'd already worked through so much of my past and finally had everything, including myself, under control. Surely all I needed to do was put it behind me and focus on the future? But sadness, fear and a nagging feeling I couldn't explain kept taking me by surprise.

I wanted to feel more connected to myself and learn to accept who I am. I've learned (and am still learning!) to embrace both of my parents and allow them back into my life (carefully), accepting everything that is there, but also everything that isn't. I'm finding that I can accept them more and more, and that feels like such a relief.

I hadn't even realised I was living in survival mode. Now I'm increasingly able to recognise when that happens and respond to it with love.

You knew when to give me a gentle nudge, helping me find the courage to take another step.

You encouraged me to think about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to achieve, and that gave me something solid to hold on to.

Most of all, I felt completely welcome, safe and seen. You really saw me for who I was, and that gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.

You truly are a wonderful gift!”

    — Rosalie

  • I wanted to feel freer and calmer.

“What I find so special is how you can put your finger on exactly the right sore spot. Even when I'm struggling to put my feelings into words, you somehow manage to piece everything together. You help me understand what's really happening, how I'm feeling and how the people around me might be feeling too.

Over the past few years, you've helped me see that I can simply be myself. And by allowing myself to do that, I've been able to grow in the way I see myself and in my relationships with others.

Without pushing, forcing things or putting pressure on myself or anyone else, I've made some enormous progress in a surprisingly short time, all at my own pace.

I'm becoming more and more comfortable with who I am, including the parts of myself that aren't always at their best.”

    — Irene

  • Working with Toekie has felt like a gift to myself.

“When I started working with Toekie, I wanted to find a loving way to help both myself and my children navigate the next chapter of our lives. As my children were growing into adults, we were experiencing more and more misunderstandings. I wanted things to change, while being mindful of the impact on them.

The work was intense. There were moments of struggle, playfulness, emotional upheaval and pain (which, according to Toekie, is sometimes part of the process ;-)). It brought a lot to the surface.

One of the most valuable things I learned was how to set boundaries and actually stick to them. Boundaries that reflect what matters to me and what feels right for me.

I had some difficult decisions to make, and with Toekie's support, I found the strength to stand by them. That has brought me so much more self-love, clarity, confidence and stability.

Toekie has lovingly guided me (and us) into the next stage of life. She does this with a warm heart, expertise, passion and dedication.

Working with Toekie is the most beautiful gift I could have given myself, and I'm so glad I did.”
